Tobacco Museum in Maia

In the parish of Maia, in the north of the island of São Miguel, east of the municipality of Ribeira Grande, is the Museu do Tabaco da Maia, a scientific — cultural body of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Divino Espírito Santo da Maia, the only museum in Europe dedicated to the research and dissemination of the tobacco agro-industrial, from a perspective of social and local development.
The Museu do Tabaco da Maia, in addition to contributing to preserve the historical and social memory of tobacco culture in the parish of Maia, aims essentially to integrate the resources of this heritage into a global project that contributes to the socio-economic development of the parishes of the Eastern Zone of the Municipality of Ribeira Grande (Porto Formoso, S. Brás, Maia, Lomba da Maia, Fenais D'Ajuda and Lomba de São Pedro).
The Museu do Tabaco da Maia long-term exhibition includes 5 spaces: weighing and pressing room, direct heat dryer, indirect heat dryer, bridge-balm and tobacco plantations. We also find a small tearoom, where the visitor can taste our delicious liqueurs, taste the already known tea area or simply sit back and enjoy the surroundings.
The Museu do Tabaco da Maia has a small auditorium — “Hermano Mota auditorium”- which is also used as a temporary exhibition hall and a library.

Aurora Social

Aurora Social's mission is to promote the occupation, rehabilitation and personal, social and professional appreciation of young people and adults with mild and moderate mental disabilities. It was founded in April 1994 by a group of parents whose common concern was the social and professional integration of their children. Since then, it has grown and developed.
Today, it is a reference institution in the market that operates, on the one hand, in the context of the solidarity economy, in order to support its own sustainability and guarantee the jobs created for people with special needs and, on the other hand, in the management of an Occupational Activities Center, working skills that aim to promote the autonomy of the individual and the active participation of the individual in the community. Operating in the city of Ponta Delgada, since 1994, Aurora Social is dedicated specifically to the areas of Catering, Catering and Artisanal Binding. The Sweets, traditional and refined, are of recognized merit, having already collected several awards in the categories of regional and convent sweets. Some say it's here if you make the best bean pudding on the island! The Catering Service is in charge of a specialized team ready to serve and satisfy any event. They prepare with rigor and quality the most varied menus for private and business parties, such as lunches and dinners, birthdays, baptisms, communions, among others, and have a wide range of appetizers and sweets that make the difference in any coffee break, cocktail or other similar events. They maintain a daily take-away meal service with the possibility of home delivery.

Aurora Social also has a Handmade Binding service, where all kinds of personalized binding requests are executed (books, brochures, theses, covers, dossiers, among others) and are also proud to promote the restoration of covers and spines of old or damaged books.

ARRISCA Cerâmica

ARRISCA CERÂMICA It is a formative and productive workshop, constituted in January 2007 by ARRISCA — Associação Regional de Reabilitação e Integração Sociocultural dos Açores, with the objective of promoting occupational and work habits in its target audience, contributing to its integration into the community.

ARRISCA CERÂMICA develops works in regional crafts, painting of crockery and tiles, aiming at the promotion and maintenance of cultural traditions promoting our identity.

Social and Cultural Centre of Atalhada

Centro Social e Cultural da Atalhada is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, created on September 17, 1997, with the intention of promoting social and cultural activities to support the population.

The Craft Area «Lagoa Vale a Pena», is a valence of this Institution, and was created in December 1997, by the Project to Fight Poverty «Lagoa Vale a Pena».

In addition to serving the community with traditional handicrafts, recovery of old pieces and sewing work, this area has as main objective the training of young people and women who wish to learn how to perform various works, using manual art, thus contributing to the qualifying development of human resources, with a view to increasing family income.

ARRISCA Carpenters Workshop

ARRISCA CARPPINTARIA develops all kinds of woodwork ranging from furniture manufacturing to restoration. It has a diversified team that seeks to meet customer expectations with innovative products and ideas.

It's much more than carpentry. Centro Socail e Cultural da Atalhada Bakery

The Social and Cultural Centre of Atalhada is a Private Social Solidarity Institution (IPSS) created on the 17th of September of 1997 to promote social and cultural activities with the local population.
Its Centro Social e Cultural da Atalhada Bakery was created on the 3rd of May of 1999 within the scope of the «Lagoa Vale a Pena» Fight Against Poverty Project.

Its main goals are to set up, in the Água de Pau parish, a selling spot for traditional bakery goods and the training of human resources with a view to their later social and professional integration.

Sra. Da Paz Handicrafts and Social Solidarity Cooperative

Cooperativa de Artesanato e Solidariedade Social Senhora da Paz was established in October 1997. At the base of its foundation was the urgent need to ensure occupation, integration and complement of the family income of the former students and young people in charge of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate who suddenly closed that service in the Convent.

With the creation of the cooperative we tried to protect and continue the "art" and "knowledge" transmitted, over dozens of years by the Sisters, as well as by the artisans, coming from the municipality of Vila Franca in the most diverse areas, namely embroidery, especially the "Regional Embroidery" and the "Embroidery of Gold", fish scales, pottery and weaving.

Work And Protection Home for the Female Youth of Nordeste

Created on the 1st of January of 1937 by Dona Maria do Carmo Monte to take in poor girls, educate them along Christian morals and prepare them for life, They were taught to embroider, lace and weave filling magnificent trunks.
Over the years it has changed location but never stopped promoting handicrafts and protecting infancy and youth.

It has been in the current grandiose facilities at the entrance of this magnificent town that charm the eyes of visitors since the 28th of November of 1954. It is the living inheritance of the work and unbreakable will to protect the weakest and the culture of Nordeste.

Sol Nascente Association

Associação Sol Nascente it's a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, created in 1998, with headquarters in Salga, Municipality of Nordeste. This association shone from the spirit of volunteering of women and men willing to overcome some difficulties in the parish, particularly with regard to women, young people and children.

Associação Sol Nascente aims to increase social solidarity, promote equal opportunities, respect and value the environment, respect and value cultural diversity and contribute to local development. In the area of Pastry and Cooking we produce a diverse range of products based on traditional homemade recipes using traditional methods.

To this end, Associação Sol Nascente created a micro-enterprise of solidarity economy, which does not aim at profit by profit but rather the creation of jobs and the training of individuals in poverty or social exclusion.
Having started the activities with a group of 7 collaborators, since then has been developing the range of products in the area of pastry and cooking, since we serve school meals in the county, as well as the integration of people at risk, we now have 16 employees being 6 of the board of the institution full time, 2 par-time, 1 green receipt, 2 contract and 5 of the regional government's occupational programs (Prosa and SEI).

In the area of child and youth support, Associação Sol Nascente has spaces equipped with all conditions for Leisure Activities, which works daily with children from five to twelve years old. We also have rooms adapted for training in the area of handicrafts and training programs in the cultural area, such as music, popular dances and theater.

North Farm

The Quinta do Norte Project began with the invitation from the Secretaria Regional da Solidariedade Social (the Azores Government social solidarity body) made to a group of institutions to renovate and rehabilitate the former Casa do Gaiato. Cooperation is the project’s basic concept and the partners are: Cresaçor, Associação Novo Dia, ARRISCA, São Miguel’s Casa do Gaiato, Associação Norte Crescente and Tetrapi. Aside from the infrastructures, the Quinta has almost 1400m2 of land where different animals are bred and raised and fruit and vegetables are grown. The renovated Pomar (orchard) is already clearly visible with the (re)birth of different fruit trees and new vegetables are being introduced. Aiming to obtain recognition as a “pedagogical farm”, different animals may be visited,

such as cows, goats, deer, pigs, chicken or rabbits, among others. With the main objective of fighting poverty and social exclusion, the compound is undertaking transformation and acquiring new functions. The goal of achieving the social and professional insertion and reinsertion of a public with low employability has given birth to the development of different active employment programmes in the areas of local and rural development, social and agricultural entrepreneurship, training for new jobs, biological agriculture and social ans solidarity tourism. In short, the idea is to create an occupational, pedagogical, ludic and communitarian space guided by the principles of environmental sustainability.
